Blood Reef

 Blood reef consists of a variety of dive sites. The name is derived from the whale blood and other waste that were disposed of by the old whaling station on the shore opposite the reefs. This is a n exciting section of reef that runs from South Pier of Durban harbour to the “fence”.

 

Bday Ledges:
 
Description:   sandstone bedrock running parallel to the shore has been eroded to form a large ledge that runs in a Northerly direction. 
Max Depth: 23m
Ave Depth: 17m
Conditions: the position of this reef makes it a consistent dive site in terms of visibility throughout the year – best visibility occurs in winter. 


Big Cave:
 
Description:  a fault running perpendicular to the shore opens into a large cave. This is but one of the many that we believe area in the area. This is new area of reef has proved popular amongst our divers due to the large number of tropical fish and the dramatic reef scape. There is a group of resident flap nose hound sharks that find refuge in the gullies and overhangs in the area.
Max Depth: 18m
Ave Depth: 15m
Conditions: The cave is best dived in calm seas to enable a diver to safely enter the cave. 
 


Caves:
 
Description:    a shallow reef with holes in the bedrock that have been eroded to form a cave with a vault like appearance. 
Max Depth: 10m
Ave Depth: 7m
Conditions: The caves are situated close inshore and is therefore only possible to dive in calm conditions 
 


HTH Reef:
 
Description:    a flat section of reef with small pinnacles creating a few interesting overhangs. 
Max Depth: 14m
Ave Depth: 10m
Conditions: as the reef is inshore, it is affected by any running swell – best dived in calm conditions.
