Blood Reef:

The killing of whales took place some distance offshore Durban. Whale carcasses were transported into the harbour and processed there. The stench of the offal in the harbour led to the whaling station being moved to the Bluff. The whales were off loaded in the harbour and then transported by train to the Bluff. The area of reef in front of the whaling station acquired the name "Blood Reef" from the offal and blood that were released into the sea causing the sea to discolour.
